History of the Kashmir Tulip Festival

The Kashmir Tulip Festival has a long and rich history that dates back to the Mughal era. It is said that the Mughal emperor Jahangir, who was known for his love of flowers, was the one who introduced tulips to the Kashmir Valley in the early 17th century. He was so enamored with the flower that he ordered the planting of tulips in the royal gardens of Srinagar, and even wrote a poem about them.

Over time, the cultivation of tulips in the region became more widespread, and in the 20th century, the government of Jammu and Kashmir established the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar as a way to promote the flower and the region’s tourism industry. The garden, which is spread over an area of 30 hectares, is now the largest tulip garden in Asia, and is the centerpiece of the Kashmir Tulip Festival.
